Do I need to add a crop to my favorites before I can plan it?

No, you can plan any crop right away. When you add a planting, the list shows every crop in the library, favorite or not, with type buttons such as Flowers at the top to narrow it.

Favorites just save you scrolling. In the planting form, your favorite cultivars of the crop come first, under Favorites. In the Charts, the Favorite crops quick filter keeps only what you grow this year.
